Beautiful Esalen

Dear Friends and Students,

We are so excited to share one of our favorite spots in the world with 12 of you! The Esalen Institute (www.esalen.org) in Big Sur, is high on a cliff where the Santa Lucia mountains meet the ocean. Tucked into the trees, Esalen is a restorative and contemplative haven for those who long to look deeper.

My long time teacher and friend, Barbara Stamis, and I will guide you for three days into open space and introspective Vinyasa practice. Together we will take time to deepen our breath, fill our lungs with fresh air and empty our cluttered minds.  Through detailed Vinyasa classes each day, quiet afternoons in the Esalen gardens and hot springs, we will create space for learning and healing; a long tradition at Esalen.

When we go to Esalen, we unpeel the outer layers of worldly things that we accumulate, and step into pure being.  Barbara and I aim to create this experience for each of you through classes, light structure and plenty of free time as well. This will be your experience, your retreat.

A Summary of the Weekend…

Friday, February 25th – Sunday, February 27th

Arrive and check in as early as 2 PM.

Room check in is not until 4 PM, but you will want to spend as much time as possible on the grounds!  After your scenic drive you will have a few hours to take in your new breathtaking surroundings, go for a hike in beautiful Big Sur, or enjoy the hot mineral tubs nestled on the cliffs at Esalen (please note that clothing is optional in the tubs and many go nude).

The three days of the retreat will be composed of scheduled sessions including Vinyasa Flow classes taught by Sarah Reese (morning and late afternoon), Evening Pranayama & Dharma talk sessions, and private postural assessment sessions with Barbara Stamis.  Be prepared that through these practices and deep postural adjustments you will find new intelligence within your breath, your practice and your movement.

Three abundant meals and snacks will be served each day.  Eating at Esalen is one of our favorite things, because it feels so nourishing!  The food is always fresh, usually comes straight from the Esalen garden and is always organic vegetarian with carnivore options.

We have created a schedule that allows for ample free time, because Esalen has so much to offer.  Something that shouldn’t be missed is an Esalen massage!  The style of massage offered is unique to Esalen, so heavenly and not easily forgotten.  We recommend scheduling a massage with adequate time to soak in the tubs prior.  Read more about Esalen Massage.

You may also choose to fill your afternoons exploring Big Sur hiking trails, lying on the grassy cliffs or taking walks on the grounds absorbing the beauty and serenity of Esalen.  You will want plenty of time to just BE there.

The retreat will close on Sunday, February 27th late morning.  Check out is around 1 PM.

We are limited to 12!  Reserve Your Space by February 1st!
Deposits can be given directly to Sarah or Barbara.

A note on our location:  Esalen is very communal and unique.  I remember my first time there I was not accustomed to sharing!  Esalen space and time is different. Once on the grounds you will feel the shift from your daily bustle and cocoon to a rich and open environment.  Accommodations are simple, beautiful and clean.  Rooms are shared with others attending workshops at Esalen. The rooms are all same sex. Your bedroom will be your nest for sleeping, as the majority of your time will be spent in sessions or on the incomparable grounds.

Updates will be sent by email and will be posted on both of our blogs.
